~ magical adornments ~

Most of The Ivory Dolls items are completely handmade, from dresses, faery wraps, and botanical toadstool necklaces, to cosy scarves, soft handwarmers, and woodland themed brooches.
We also love to upcycle and recycle second-hand clothes, in addition to selling occasional vintage pieces of clothing and jewellery that we feel belong within our magical world.

~ Homeware ~

In addition to providing beautiful items for you to wear, The Ivory Dolls also sources unique items for your magical home. This started life purely as a dedication to our favourite tipple with the shoppe stocking vintage teaware. This has since grown to include a variety of items for the home, including hand-painted wooden dishes and candlesticks, trinket boxes, and framed butterflies.
Homeware items are rescued from dusty corners of little antique shops and flea markets, then cleaned and restored, ready to fit perfectly into any cosy cottage, hobbit hole, or fantastical tree house.

~ Books ~

Here at The Ivory Dolls, we love to collect antique books. When deciding to part with a few volumes a few years ago and selling in our shoppe, we discovered that you loved them too. Since then, on our frequent trips to second-hand bookshops, we have started to curate a collection of wonderful vintage and antique books focusing on nature, wildlife, fairytales and mythology, for you to add to your own personal collections.

~ Sourcing Our Material ~

Here at The Ivory Dolls, we hate waste, and want to try and reduce our impact on mother nature. The fabrics and materials we use are sourced ethically; either through organic traders or (our favourite) through second-hand shopping. There’s nothing we love more than rummaging through charity shops, vintage markets and antique emporiums looking for treasures, and the majority of materials and tools we use are all sourced this way; even down to the cotton thread!

~ Old Into New ~

We try and source materials second-hand before considering anything newly manufactured and believe there’s something special about taking old items and giving them a new lease of life.
In addition to creating entirely hand-made clothing items, we also love to recycle and upcycle second-hand and vintage garments.
As all the buttons we use are thrifted, a lot of them come with threads and snippets of fabrics still attached. We love imagining the buttons’ past lives; what they originally belonged to and who wore them.

~ Botanical Dyes ~

We are conscious of the toxic dyes and pollution that are prevalent in the fashion industry, therefore whenever we need to colour our fabrics, we use botanical dyes. Being English, naturally our favourite method is tea-staining which provides a warming variety of beiges and browns, but we also love to dye items varying shades of dusky pink courtesy of avocado skins and stones, and who doesn’t love avocados? We are also growing a variety of plants in our little cottage garden to be able to produce even more natural dyes in the future.

~ Creator ~

The tea-drinking Button Faery behind The Ivory Dolls is Hollye, who lives in a small cottage nestled between Glastonbury Abbey and the Tor.
From a young age faeries, fantasy and flower gardens have always been part of her world. Her mother is a faery artist and author, so she was raised in a house full of magical artwork and books from the likes of Brian Froud, Alan Lee, Arthur Rackham, and Cicely Mary Barker. Some of her favourite films as a child were The Labyrinth, Dark Crystal, Legend, Fairytale: A True Story, The Secret Garden, as well as animated classics Fern Gully and Thumbelina. All of these elements have provided a rich tapestry of inspiration and a deep love for the magical world.
Hollye studied Art and Textiles before choosing Fashion at university, achieving two First Class degrees with honours. Her first collection was titled ‘Down the Rabbit Hole’; based on Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland with an emphasis on layering garments and tailoring.
Her Bachelor’s Degree collection was based on gothic faerytales and haute couture fashion, using couture sewing techniques, opulent fabrics and exaggerated silhouettes. Items from this collection were showcased at Graduate Fashion Week and featured in London-based indi-fashion magazine IDOL.

~ Mori Girls & Faerytales  ~

By 2012, Hollye was creating accessories from delicate lace and vintage buttons. At this time the western world was being introduced to the Japanese style Mori Girl, which literally translates to forest girl, and it was this discovery, combined with her love of faerytales and feminine style, that became the inspiration and definition for The Ivory Dolls.
The Ivory Dolls has been trading since Spring 2013.
